A world that’s not your own
Entombed in concrete
Resolved in every life
Sustain your father’s ghost
Give up on nothing
Drink in the foaming tide
And I knew the way
Like on the day I went back to church
It was not different anywhere
Our lives are faith in our then and there
Observe your authored cost
Before you’d seized it
You’d force yourself apart
And I lived the pain
That on the day I went back to church
It was not different anywhere
Our lives are faith in our then and there
Time to go underground
In counterviolence
Long may you reign in fear

Its your tilted gait
Of a thousand years of leaning always west
And since you birthed this thought there’s no turning off
The sorrow left then for what’s trampled over
When human dignity is violable
When I can predict how this all will go
For each tattooed arm, and each train departed
To the south and east our rational souls would go
You’re just a Hapsburg man,
Or a manifesto’s fresh new sycophant
I wish you could graze on this apathy.
To an unconcerned and misbegotten leading
Through the sapper’s eye to unfiltered night
To the student pogroms and clandestine rights
And now on every door that’s been marked before
And in every worthless bleeding heart that turns its own

Little rolls of paper; let them fall from your hands
Smoke a cigarette now and you’re back there again
A fist is pressing down on this nuclear life
Measuring the runoff you’re hedging inside
This stirring low despair, let it arch in your neck
And though that ardor’s constant you can’t get it back
A private world’s untruth you’re scrying in the moon
That they’d forget is all you could ever see as proof

It was at night, if you went out anymore - you would drift from street to street, looking through the bolted doors.
A brush of fear, tugging deep within your nerves, a cracking whip you yearn to feel a little true in your marrow.
For any right that you all could wish to have to outlast your permanence; to erase what you can’t give.
Now you’re alone, deep in the canvas of the city; little black lights paint the sky, urgency propels your dreaming.
And you’re in car that you labor to excise; changing colors, falling down, keeping lower than the eye
That where it goes is an aim unto itself; how can you know when it is time? How can anything belie
The notion that we are masters of ourselves when all around you is defined like a shackle or a glove
And if there’s one thing you can keep, then it all comes rushing back. Chthonic Erinyes you were; now’s the hour to give it back.

Where were the fuses, pilot lights? Lockstep in everything but time.
You chose to burn out like a match. You don’t know why you’re different.
As when conviction meets the ground, a depth of self-inflicted doubt.
You could do anything you want. You’ve learned enough of it now.
Resist and put an end to it. Safe passage for your whole intent.
Cut words out from the mouths of men. Consume and live again.
Deep in your anguished molten core you stare and stare some more.
You see the world refracted back. It looks like nothing real.

Are you downwind from your own misgivings?
Have you reckoned your wrong from right?
Under seas of walls you were tumbling down
You were caught up in the finite
Like a sudden rush of enduring lore
You believed you’re a brick that’s been caught
In your heart of hearts is a verdict you
Can only for a time hold off
In the mise-en-scene where you’re holing up
There’s a long knife in the back for you
You can breathe the words till they actualize
That you loathe all the things you do

In the course of your stay, you raise your end line
In the hours that wane in the absence of light
And every message you read is a hurt the cuts deep
In the hunger of friends, they return to their feeding
What else could change in the time that’s passing?
Were you ever ecstatic in the actions thought mattered?
Would you look out and see in a world so rooted
That you know what you give you give freely and true to yourself
Is there anything more that you could possibly lose?
Were you Danton or Rosa in their final confusions?
You can stand up and fight so long as you’re alive
But you lied to us all in how your purpose was all but your own

There’s a sense beneath the rights that tie us to the post inscribed with barely enough ink to read the damning plunge of history.
What you’ve lost can never be out in the dying of retreat. Beneath the
artifice you write there’s only you and me tonight.
And I just can’t believe no more when blood is running through and over what once was austere on the road and collective we’re each our own.
